Would creationists still have a problem with evolution if it was only animals, not humans that evolve?

It seems to me that their biggest objection to evolution is that it means that humans are actually a species of animal that gained sapience by chance. Examples of evolution at work like the Galapagos finches are dismissed off hand but the thought of a human once being a monkey-like creature appalls them. At the moment, they’re rejecting it outright and even ludicrously connecting it to other perceived evils like abortion and ity which is clearly counter productive; would it be so bad if the scientific community established a common ground? What would happen if creationists were allowed to teach their children; “God set the wheels of evolution in progress and the animals evolved and continue to evolve, but humans were always as we are today because God made us in his image.” When you think about, it’s probably not that ridiculous anyway because with modern medicine and contraception, we do seem to have stopped evolving.
